Club History

The Edith Cowan University Jets Amateur Sports Club Inc. is a multi-disciplinary sporting club based primarily at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup. The Jets was founded in late 2015 by a group of students who recognised that the number of opportunities to participate in competitive sports through the university were extremely limited. It was due to this that they decided they wanted to contribute back to the student community by providing the opportunity to connect with each other and represent their university. The original intention was for the Jets to exist as an AFL club, however the demand by students for additional sports provided an opportunity too great to refuse; it was at this point that the ECU Jets expanded to include Netball, Futsal, Touch Rugby, and Social Sports.

Over the course of the year as the club developed, the Jets affiliated with the existing ECU Cheerleading Club Inc., lending the ‘Jets’ name and branding for their competitions. This move proved extremely successful and culminated in the Jets’ acquisition of the Cheer Club in November 2016.

As the various sporting seasons commenced, the level of engagement from not only the students of ECU, but members of the wider community continued to increase, exceeding anything the club’s leaders had predicted for the inaugural year. It was this exponential growth that prompted the student leaders of the club to approach successful and prominent alumni to join the Board of Directors and provide strategic direction to help ensure the continued growth, success, and longevity of the club.

During its inaugural year in 2016, the club had over 220 active players, the majority of which played weekly games and attended evening awards sessions. Our underlying goal is to become the primary competitive sports provider at ECU, offering students, alumni, and their friends and families an opportunity to spectate, try, play, and win a variety of sports, at social, inter-varsity, amateur, and national levels.
